Before young children can be successful readers, they should get experience with books as toys. Today’s future readers are “sensory” driven. They need to see, touch, and hear stories in order to increase their reading comprehension. Parents and parent role models start by singing and reading nursery rhymes. The activity ideas found on this website are geared to support book titles in specific or general ways. Each week activity ideas will be listed in the Read2Me club site.
The purpose for activities related to books is to give the child a reading strategy based on “sensory” experience offering them an extension of the book. Activities give future readers another way to know the story. Parents and parent role models are already giving their future readers a head start when they watch a book being read on t.v. or listen to a CD of a certain book. I found Radio Disney has story time on their 10a.m. radio broadcast, which fits into even the busiest schedule.
Reasons for incorporating reading activities allows for better comprehension of the story. Exposing future readers to vocabulary found in popular titles will provide them with a strong school foundation. Other reasons to having reading activities is to have practice in language skills and language development through books. Also, to provide future readers with a literature-rich environment.
The list of reasons and a purpose for reading activities in this age group is never ending. It starts at home and continues through the school-age years. Remember a story will be most remembered when a future reader can see, touch, and hear it. Keep logging onto this website for more ideas.…….
