Improve Reading Comprehension: Start with these Six-Simple-Steps

Who?

Choose a theme for your club. There should be no more than 6-8 total members. (A facilitator 16 years or older is suggested to run the club meetings for middle school clubs and younger.)

What?

Choose book titles that are of interest to your club (holiday, theme, authors, genre, etc.), age appropriate, and at least one reading grade level below and up to the average clubs grade level. (Example: For a 4th grade reading club, choose titles written at a 3rd grade through 4th grade reading level.) (Consider interest only for adults; age and reading levels are not needed for adult clubs.) Go to the local library, school library or college library and provide samples of several books for readers to look through at the initial meeting. Consider the average reading level of the club, when choosing a title. The title should be chosen by the end of the meeting. Each member is responsible for getting their own book. Why?

See our Mission Statement and Philosophy Statement.

When?

Meetings should be held once a week. Hours and times should be determined at the first meeting. The average meeting should take about 30-60 minutes. Facilitators should work this out in advance.

Where?

1. Meetings should be held at a home, conference room, library, book store or coffee house, etc., that has no charge or any place where the meeting will be successful. Facilitators should work this out in advance.
2. Each member can take turns hosting club meetings or one club member can hold all club meetings at their home.

How?

Send invitations out to invite members to the initial meeting or give a call.
